Principles of Mediation

Antworks Family Mediation colleague is using sign language to support an online mediation session at Antworks Family Mediation

Our approach is that everyone can be included and we can make necessary adjustments to ensure that the family mediation process works for you. We work in partnership with a wide range of professionals who can help. This includes legal and financial professionals but also people with expertise in disability, neurodivergence, cultural needs, sign or other languages, or anything else that’s going to help mediation work for you. Make sure to tell us about yourself and any needs you have, we’ll do what we can to make our family mediation accessible.

At Antworks Family Mediation we are proud to comply with the Family Mediation Council’s Code of Conduct for Mediators. Our practice is anchored by four core principles of Family Mediation.

  • Voluntary Participation: Attending family mediation is entirely optional, and you can pause or stop the process at any time. No decisions can be forced upon you.
  • Family Mediator Impartiality: The family mediator is a neutral third party. They do not take sides, judge who is right or wrong, or give personal legal advice, but rather facilitate constructive communication.
  • Confidentiality: Discussions and proposals within family mediation are private. If an agreement is not reached, the court will generally never be told what was discussed. Exceptions only apply if there is a risk of harm to a child or vulnerable adult.
  • Participant-Led Decision Making: You and your ex-partner remain in total control of the outcome. The family mediator does not make decisions; they help you craft solutions that work for your specific family.

In addition to the core principles of family mediation, Antworks Family Mediation has adopted principles of service which are:

  • Accessibility and Inclusion
  • Integrity and Transparency
  • Respect and Dignity
  • Professional Excellence

We use a range of guiding policies to support us to carry out our work in a safe and accountable way. Use the links below to explore our policies.

We are confident that family mediation can be a safe, successful, lasting, and cost-effective alternative to a court-only process.
